TomTom Go 910 |
Excellent older GPS system with large 30 gig harddrive. Enables you to have North American and European maps on one device. Can also download audio books, if desired. |
The automatic sensor to switch between day and night driving eventually failed and now it must be done manually. The unit is a little heavy compared to newer models. |

Garmin Nuvi 660 |
Ease of use and clear vision, bluetooth (allowing speaker phone) MP3 player, Travel Kit are all excellent. Great reliability - Ive have had no problems with this Garmin Nuvi since I bought it in 1997. I would never change brands. |
Garmins support for Mac OS X has been patchy at best. It is improving.
Third party apps for Garmin are a bit thin on the ground and too male focused. |

Garmin 1340T |
love it! larger sized display; very clear; great in all light and extremely fast processing too.
great device, highly recommended. |
i can understand how it might not be very bright,
e.g. it pronounces Thynne Street as Thin Street
(which i still find very funny).
however, when it pronounces Manchester as Man (wait for it) Chester i feel like crying
- REALLY annoying! |

Easy to use, so far I have had no problems with it, one of the best motorbike GPS... at the time:) |

Garmin Nuvi 1300 |
I first used a Tom Tom GPS portable unit. I then got to use a Garmin which I liked better. |
The Garmin is more precise when you at close to your destination. It will let you know whether the destination is on the right or left. The Tom Tom would leave me searching. |

NAVIGON 40 Premium (Updated to 92 Premium) |
Pretty fast start up.
Crashes less than all the TomToms I ever owned (not many, but once-bitten and all that.)
Clear display.
Reasonable battery life.
Worked well when I was walking around Milan.
|
Cannot add Japanese voice - Those of us that speak Japanese find the TomTom Japanese voice much more accurate than the English! I wanted the same for my Navigon, but no such luck. |

Garmin nüvi® 3790LMT |
I have had 8 different GPSs this one is by far the best one I have used.
The first thing I like about the Garmin 3790 is the way it plugs into the cradle. nothing harder on the GPS then to have to pull a cord out from the back of it. The touch screen is very responsive. Easy to operate. and is voice commanded for true hands free operation. |
There is little I have found wrong with this unit. If I am pushed I would have to say the voice command will switch on even when I am not asking for it once and a while. Not really that big of a deal. |

Garmin nuvi 50LM |
I got Garmin 50LM two days ago. 50LM has a few useful new features than my old Garmin 255W such lane assistance and over speed limit warning. Lifetime Map update is a must-have feature. |
The battery in 50LM lasts only two hours after fully-charged. My old 255W battery lasts four hours after fully-charged. |

Nuvi 3790LMT |
Sleek, light-weight. Fast calculations of map data. Easy to update maps, pois. Still learning more about it as i Just got it a week ago. Picture viewer built-in. Pedestrian maps function is awesome. |
Voice command - You have to speak address one piece at a time, i.e. instead of being able to say 22 Main Street, Newton, Pa you have to say, Newton, then 22, then Main Street. |

TOMTOM xl live |
Clearly shows which lane to take at junctions so you don’t miss your turning. On the most difficult highway intersections, realistic 3D representation of the junction keeps you relaxed and safe. |
The different alert sounds are very similar. Does not automatically pick up mobile speed cameras. |

TomTom XXL 540 TM World Edition |
Love it. 8/10. Always gets me to an address in an efficient, smart, easy manner. Routes make sense. Accurate. Good traffic info and rerouting. IQ routes are amazing--a colossal improvement over the older tomtoms without it--great concept, great effectiveness. |
Lackluster POI system, especially the terrible POI search. Seems like theyre 10 years behind what they could have done with the POI part. Sometimes takes more than 2 or 3 minutes to get a signal, for no good reason. Usually less than a minute though. Would give anything if it always, always said what the turn after the next one would be, would be so easy to do, and would make driving so much easier and safer. |

Garmin Nuvi 3970t |
This is my first GPS Device and after a little getting used to it works very well, even the map that I bought was 7 years old (very naughty of Garmin have that on the market) I went around northern Argentina and it was a life saver. Living in Sao Paulo in Brasil you need a good GPS, and it is. |
The device is fine but downloading software is a bit archaic, but the unit is reliable. The issue with map updates is a little annoying as there seems to be a couple a year and they expect you to purchase them at USD 50 a shot..If I had the choice again, I would buy the Garmin Montana as its good for trail as well as the road. Also you can upload trips etc from the Trip planner and Base Camp programs on the computer to the device, which you cant do in the Nuvi 3790t. |

Navman MY80T |
The intuitive search is good. Just enter a key word and it lists all addresses, POIs etc.
The choice of routes can sometimes be handy...if you know the area. |
Navdesk is piece of rubbish. Some of the worst software I have encountered. The map sync has never worked. The My Places are NOT editable from NavDesk as the manual wrongly suggests.
The ON/OFF/RESET switch is a step backwards. Its too easy to switch it to RESET when switching it off. My old S90 had a push button, very handy to shut the thing up quickly while you're on the phone. No such luck with the MT series.
NavMan Tech Support. Well what good can I say about them except they answer the phone quickly. That of course is where their usefulness ends. Calling them Idiots would be praising them.
SUMMARY...Buy a Garmin. |

Garmin 1490T |
Nice display and handy to be able to add custom POI files. |
Very handy - no particular problems though it is slow to find satellites and also the traffic updates sometimes come through too late. The other day there was an accident closing a road near my work for most of the morning from 6 am on bu this did not show up at all.
Also the upload of contacts to the phone has only happened once in the last month since ownership and is now gone again. |

Simple,quick,and trouble free.
Have not had a single hiccup,I can only highly recommend it.
This is my third Garmin and they only get better.I even took it overseas and it also worked well over there. |
on the very odd occasion it would be unable to get a signal even on an open area and switching it off and then back on after 10 or 15 seconds and then would pick up signal straight away. |

Kenwood KNA-G431AU |
Keep in mind the device is an IN-CAR unit (built in under he dash (in the glove box in my case)
So . Its easily accessed, and upgraded. Good POI support (Garmin). Good map update support again through Garmin or if your loaded through Kenwood.
Has USB interface for direct upload. Seems quick enough. Unknown support for additional sound /proximity warnings. Buts a stow away unit is hard to steal I guess. |
Unknown if you can change TTS voices from what comes with the unit.
A little expensive.

Nuvi 265WT\Droid X |
Nuvi: is easy to use and the included traffice receiver helps. Maps are loaded on unit. Nice and reliable.
Droid X: should technically always have the latest map available thru google nav. One less device to carry around. |
Nuvi: additional device to carry, traffic receiver data is not helpful at time if its on the providers radar
Droid X; needs 3G connection or map will not download. Had some freeze up with some version of Google Nav in the past. Using Nav and DailyRoads (car blockboxvideo trip recorder) kills the battery. |

Tom Tom Go 730 |
I like the 730 better than the newer models. Full featured, with MP3 Player, and SD Card slot. |
Not the devices fault, but I bought mine refurbished directly from Tom Tom without realizing you have to buy a map subscription to get an updated map. The one that came with it was years old. Beware! |

Large display. Locks on quickly. Expandable via micro-SD card. Intuitive to use. Lifetime Map updates (4 per year) included in price. Lifetime subscription to FM Traffic reports in major centers included in price. Stores 10 routes. Fast at recognizing deviation from route and recalculating a new one. |
No voice control. Hides some map details at highway speeds. No case or AC power. Requires a trick to operate the GPS while powered through a standard USB cable because GPS thinks that it is connected to a computer. |
